I.The Department :

The subject of Forensic science was introduced in this university at the postgraduate level with a provision for the Ph.D. program in August, 1974. Forensic Science curriculum in Punjabi University covers a wide spectrum of subjects such as ballistics, chemistry, toxicology, biology, serology, questioned documents examination,Physics,Forensic Medicine,Criminology and Criminal law etc. Besides giving the students the basic fundamentals of various aspects of the subject, extensive practicals are carried on with simulated cases in the department. Professional forensic scientists from central and state Forensic Science Laboratories, senior police officers and experts from University departments and medical colleges are invited in the teaching and training programme of the students of the university. Practicals and demonstration programmes are arranged in the Forensic Science Laboratories involving actual case materials and students are exposed to courts to witness the court procedures and cross examination process.

The students who have received their degrees in Forensic Science from this department are well placed and are gainfully employed in various organisations like Forensic Science Laboratories, Customs, Excise, Police and other investigating agencies, Private practitioners as consultants , questioned document examiners, army, etc.

Every year twelve students are admitted to the course and this has been done keeping the facilities available and requirement of the country in mind. Presently four of the students of this department are the member of the teaching faculty in the Forensic Science Department in the University. In a significant decision, the university has permitted the department to start consultancy services on payment basis and in a number of cases the opinion of the experts of this department has been sought by the university and outside agencies. The department has also imparted training to several scientists from the Forensic Science laboratories and universities. The department has attracted a number of foreign students for the degree courses in this university(Malaysia, Nigeria). So far more than twenty five students have received their Ph.D. degrees in Forensic Science in this university including one foreign student. More than one hundred research papers have been published from this department in national and international journals. The faculty of this department has represented at a number of national and international conferences/symposia etc. held in India and abroad.
