Welcome to the Department of Library & Information Science homepage.

The Department was established in 1969, with starting of Bachelor of Library Science Programme. During early '80s, keeping in view the developments in the subject the scope was enlarged from `Library Science' to "Library & Information Science" with a similar change in the name of the department from `Department of Library Science'to "Department of Library & Information Science". Over the years, it has developed into one of the leading departments in Library & Information Science in India.


Teaching Programmes

The department offers two post-graduate teaching programmes. The academic session for both these programmes starts in July every year.

  • Bachelor of Library & Information Science (BLISc)

    Started as Bachelor of Library Science (BLSc) in 1969, it was later upgraded to BLISc. It is a one year full time course having 20 seats. Admission requirements for the course include: A bachelor's degree in any discipline with a minimum of 50% marks. Admission process begins in July and the relative merits for admission are computed on the basis of percentage of marks in the bachelor's degree. The examinations for this course are held during the months of April and May

    Course Contents:

    The BLISc course consists of eight papers, and with effect from academic session 2003-04 semester system of examination is followed. The papers are:

    1. Foundations of Library & Information Science
    2. Knowledge Organisation and Information Processing
    3. Library Classification (Practice)
    4. Library Cataloguing (Practice)
    5. Management of Libraries and Information Centres
    6. Library and users
    7. Information Sources and Services
    8. Information Technology: Basics

     

  • Master of Library & Information Science (MLISc)

    Started in 1987, this programme is of one year duration. It is a full time course with 12 seats at present. Admission requirements for the course include: a) BLSc or BLISc degree with a minimum of 50% marks; and b) 30% marks in the entrance test conducted by the university, normally during June. Admission process begins in July and the relative merits are computed on the basis of percentage of marks in the BLSc/BLISc degree and in the entrance examination. The examinations for this course are held during the months of April and May

    Course Contents:

    The MLISc course consists of eight papers, and with effect from academic session 2003-04 semester system of examination is followed. The eight papers four each in both semesters alongwith their options are:

    1. Research Methods and Statistical Techniques
    2. A. Information, Communication, and Society,  or
      B. Dissertation
    3. Information storage and retrieval
    4. (i) Advanced Classification (Practice)
      and
      (ii) Advanced Cataloguing (Practice)
    5. Information analysis, consolidation and repackaging
    6. A. Information and Literature Survey in Sciences, or
      B. Information and Literature Survey in Social Sciences, or
      C. Information and Literature Survey in the Humanities
    7. A. Public Library System, or
      B. Academic Library System, or
      C. Special Library System
    8. Information and Communication Technology: Applications

    Of these papers, written examinations are conducted except for Paper 2 B. For paper 2 B students are required to submit a dissertation upon carrying out the research on the topic alloted to him/her, latest by the end of three months from the date of their last written examination.

      IT Resources

      The department was among the earliest LIS departments in India to develop its own Computer Laboratory in late 1980s. Toaday,it has 5 pentium computers, 3 printers, a scanner and other peripherals.

      The Computer Laboratory in the department has been connected to the Internet, through the Lcal Area Network (LAN) in the University. The facilities available via the Internet include: email, TELNET, file transfer protocol (FTP), and hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP).

      A Virtual Library for Information & Library Professionals is also being created in the departmrnt. The emphasis of this Virtual Library would be on the Asian Websites, particularly South Asian Websites of interest to academics worldwide. Started as an experimental venture, it would later be expanded into a `Multimedia Virtual Library.' Its URL is <http://www.universitypunjabi.org/dlis/vlib.htm>.

      Departmental Library-cum-Workshop

      The department has its own departmental library. Housed in a hall in the department, it is infact a special library on LIbrary & Information Science, and it also acts as a workshop for the students. It has a collection of more than 1300 monographs, which include some refernce books, text books, advanced treatises, standards and general interest books. The library also receives more than 20 periodicals. The library has also got a few books from the Central Library of the University.

      Alumni of the Department

      Since 1969, when the department was established, more than 600 students have passed out from the department. While some of them are occupying prestigious positions, information about many is still not available. Here is a call for those alumini, about whom information is not available or updated, to inform us about themselves, so that information about them is also added/updated.
