Apprenticeship is an ancient way of learning a trade or craft. In the past there was no other way by which one can learn and acquire a skill. If one wanted to become a professional in some trade then the way to start was by becoming an apprentice. It usually started when one is still very young. A child becomes attached to an apprentice and is usually assigned very menial tasks in the shop. Cleaning and preparing the materials and tools needed by the master. At that early stage the apprentice is expected to observe and become familiar with how the master goes about with his craft and how the trade is done. It is also expected that the master would be giving some simple and basic lessons for the apprentice to study.

That was the kind of arrangement in the past when formal schooling was still not required for all children. One has to pick the occupation that one desires at an early age and pick the master. Usually tradesmen who have children turn out to be their masters as well, so the trade stays within the family for generations.

This system has generated some of the greatest artists and craftsmen in the world. The revered artists from the Renaissance period all had to undergo apprenticeships under the great masters of their time. That is where they learned to sharpen their extraordinary talent.

There is a downside to this system though and that is the period back then was too long. The training started at an early age and continued until one can become a journeyman, who was a kind of junior craftsman. In the absence of universal schooling however, the system was really needed.
